Bartender (Operator) Licenses

A bartender (operator) license is required to serve and sell alcohol in licensed establishments, as outlined in the Wisconsin Statutes 125.17. There are two options:

  • City of New Berlin Bartender (Operator) License — valid only within New Berlin.
  • State of Wisconsin Bartender License — valid statewide.

City of New Berlin Bartender (Operator) License

  • Issued by: City of New Berlin
  • Valid for: 2 years (expires June 30)
  • Fee: $70 (includes $10 background check)
  • Payment: Cash or check only (no credit cards)
  • Valid in: Licensed establishments within New Berlin

State of Wisconsin Bartender (Operator) License

  • Issued by: Wisconsin Department of Revenue (DOR)
  • Valid for: 2 years
  • Fee: $200
  • Payment: Credit/debit
  • Valid in: All municipalities statewide

Apply for a City of New Berlin License

Follow these steps to apply for a bartender (operator) license through the City of New Berlin.

  1. Submit a  Bartender License Application (PDF)  in person or by mail.
  2. A background check will be conducted.
  3. The Common Council reviews the application.
  4. If the background check reveals disqualifying issues, the application may be denied. Fees are non-refundable.

Apply for a State of Wisconsin License

Apply online through the Wisconsin Department of Revenue.

  1.  Open Wisconsin DOR – My Tax Account (MTA) .
  2. Scroll to the “Excise” section.
  3. Select “Operator’s Permit”.
  4. Complete and submit the Wisconsin State Bartender/Operator online application.

Responsible Beverage Server’s Course

Most applicants must complete an approved Responsible Beverage Server’s Course.

  • You may be exempt if you held a valid bartender license within the last two years, or
  • Completed the course within the last two years.
  • Proof of completion is required before a license is issued.
  • Find a course:  DOR Alcohol Seller/Server .

City vs. State License

The City license is faster and less expensive if you only plan to work within New Berlin. The State license costs more but is valid in any Wisconsin municipality. Both options require compliance with training and background check requirements.
